There is no doubt that there is a surplus of pain and suffering, but the message here is that we cannot beat violence with more violence.

The first verse and chorus reveal the song's meaning from the get-go. The curious part here is that Stevie Wonder notes that his words are controversial and could lead to "tears and pain." That is, he recognizes the troubling nature of forgiving those who commit wrongdoings. He understands that to act with love first is not an easy ask. Nonetheless, it is a choice that he urges us all to take because we are the only ones that can control the spread of hatred.
