Artist: Stevie Wonder with Take 6
Title: Love's in Need of Love Today
Year Released: 1976
Year Performed: 2001
Composer: Stevie Wonder
Genre: Soul

Stevie Wonder performed this song following the 9/11 terrorist attack. He reminds us that to hate or kill others in the name of our God(s) is unholy and curses that which we admire. With his song, Stevie Wonder encourages his listeners to give love in order to receive love. There is no doubt that there is a surplus of pain and suffering, but the message here is that we cannot beat violence with more violence.

The first verse and chorus reveal the song's meaning from the get-go. The curious part here is that Stevie Wonder notes that his words are controversial and could lead to "tears and pain." That is, he recognizes the troubling nature of forgiving those who commit wrongdoings. He understands that to act with love first is not an easy ask. Nonetheless, it is a choice that he urges us all to take because we are the only ones that can control the spread of hatred.

Disclaimer: there is a typo in the image below. The lyric should say If love and peace you treasure.

This second verse and start of the second chorus expand on the idea that hatred, in all its forms, is evil. Moreover, hatred is a force that consumes us and clouds the love and peace we strive towards. Without acknowledging this, hatred will destroy everyone—we will allow it to further divide us and pin us against one another.

The precautionary measures we must take are to recognize the harm, choose to act out of love, and, in doing so, join forces.

Along with these direct lyrics, the soft piano and church-like choir establish a warm mood similar to a nurturing environment. The low percussion allows listeners to focus on the lyrics. Stevie Wonder's deep yet calming voice contributes to this gentle announcement. In the softness of this music, we nurture love.

Connection to Playlist

This song reintroduces the themes of social change previously present in my playlist by connecting it to the self-love, familial love, and relationship love of Weeks 4 through 6. Stevie Wonder reminds us that, especially in times of hardship and sorrow, we need to act with love. This Heart of Gold is what will lead to positive social change. The more we care for one another, the more willing we may be to unite and reach compromises.
