In honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the weekly prompt of social change led me to Selma. In watching this music video with scenes of the movie and listening to the lyrics of persistence, I realized the slow nature of progress in our country. The abolition of slavery; the passing of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments; the Civil Rights Movement; Black Lives Matter; and many other protests prior to, between, and after these. Despite these effortless attempts throughout our nation's history, racism continues to plague our society.

These small victories, though largely significant, also highlight the need for more advocacy for the rights of Black Americans. In this sense, John Legend and Common's take on this reality is both eye-opening and motivational. Not only do they honor the movement by listing major events, but also they recognize the power of the people. Common speaks on the importance of historical figures, the wisdom of the elders, as well as new generations, young people's energy. To eradicate injustice, this mixture of unity, perseverance, and hope will allow the movement to prevail.

Connection to Playlist

This selection completes the first trinity of "Gold, God, and Glory," its title being a direct correlation. Glory discusses the history of Black Americans and the challenges they have faced in pursuit of equal freedoms. It is important to know our nation's history, even if it is dark, because it allows us to recognize our predecessors' wrongdoings. This way, we can envision and create a world that is more respectful and just.
